Svefa has acted as advisor to the German asset manager MEAG. A consortium led by MEAG together with Soya Group is acquiring 175,000 hectares of forest land from Stora Enso. The transaction, with an enterprise value of SEK 9.8 billion, is one of the largest forest property deals in Sweden in recent history.
Svefa’s advisory role encompassed forest valuation and in-depth market analysis across a geographically diverse portfolio. The asset spans a significant part of central Sweden and includes multiple local markets – each with distinct legal, environmental, and commercial frameworks.
“This is a landmark transaction, both in terms of scale and complexity. Understanding regional market dynamics has been essential in successfully supporting the joint venture acquistion,” says Niklas Lundberg, Project Lead and Head of Business Development at Svefa Skog & Lantbruk.
“MEAG has valued Svefa as an experienced appraiser with a deep understanding of the Swedish forestry market and its regional submarkets. Their support in this landmark transaction has been excellent and enabled us to develop a thorough insight into the acquired forests” says Gabriela Sarafjan, Senior Investment Manager at MEAG
Svefa’s mandate also included strategic guidance on the regulatory landscape governing forest ownership in Sweden – a key consideration for international investors.
“Our expertise in both the Swedish and broader European forest land markets have been pivotal. Svefa regularly advises on transactions across the Nordic region, the Baltics, and wider Europe, and our strong local presence enables us to deliver uniquely grounded insight into valuation, regulation, and investment strategy,” continues Niklas Lundberg.
